Rumours have been ripe alleging that the federation had given the Serbian an ultimatum but Magogo now says the coach needs time to deliver. Micho has been under immense criticism for his Cranes poor performance in the first two opening matches of the Afcon 2023 qualifiers in which Uganda has only managed to salvage a point out of six.
Micho needs time, Magogo says, insists Uganda has facilities to host Afcon
Federation of Uganda Football president Moses Magogo has backed Cranes coach Milutin Sredojevic aka Micho to stay in-charge of the national team.
“We have not given an ultimatum to Micho. We all know that a coach needs time to deliver results. For a coach to deliver results, sincerely speaking, we need to give them time”, he said while speaking on NBS TV.
He insists that Uganda has the facilities to host Afcon in 2027. Magogo says Uganda with funding, the facilities can be put in place to enable the country co-host the prestigious continental showpiece.
President Yoweri Museveni reportedly informally requested the National Council of Sports to ‘look into the issue’ of Uganda hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
According to reports, Uganda plans to front a joint bid with neighbours Tanzania to co-host the event.
“We are talking about co-hosting AFCON. Uganda has the facilities to host the tournament, apart from the three required stadiums. With funding, these facilities can be put in place. Co-hosting AFCON is something we can achieve”, he said.
Magogo defended the federation taking the lion’s share of government funds to sports saying that football unlike other sports enjoys mass popularity and is more competitive.
“The reasons for appropriation of government money are clear. Medals is not one of them. The entity appropriating is more interested in revenue generation. In regards to football, we are talking about 10 active national teams”, he explained.
