Lukwago plays for Ethiopian giants St. George, whom he guided to the league title after three seasons. The Cranes shot stopper posted a record 20 clean-sheets in 27 games catapult the team to the top of the table.
Cranes goalie Charles Lukwago wins ‘Best Goalkeeper Award’ in Ethiopia
Uganda Cranes goalkeeper has won the ‘Best Goalkeeper Award ‘in the Ethiopia Premier League Awards.
In his address that was relayed at the ceremony which he couldn’t attend in person, Lukwago downplayed his individual heroics stressing that winning the league title is of much more value.
“We had an amazing season as a team and as an individual… to post 20 clean sheets in 27 games is an outstanding performance but the overall achievement is the team winning the league after three years. That is something I’m much happier about than winning this”, he said.
Ugandan goalkeepers who played for the Ethiopian side include Denis Onyango, Posnet Omony, Hannington Kalyesubula and Robert Odongkara.
Prior to joining St George, Lukwago captained KCCA FC after the transfer of Timothy Awanyi to Ashdod in Israel.
He recently captured headlines with several fine saves Uganda lost 2-0 to Algeria in the 2023 Ivory Coast Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
