The victory means Cheptegei joins the exclusive league of Ethiopian greats Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and British track and field legend Mo Farah - the only humans to have won back-to-back world 10,000m championships.

Joshua Cheptegei has won gold and Jacob Kiplimo bronze in the 10,000m finals in the 2022 World Athletics Championships Eugene, Oregon, USA.
Olympics champion Selemon Barega, World champion Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo, diminutive Rodgers Kwemoi, Worku, Aregawi, Waithaka Mburu, Ahmed Mohammed and more - the men's 10,000m finals at the World Athletics Championship, 2022 Eugene,Oregon, USA produced one of the most intensive races in history.
With hardly a leading pack in the race throughout the race , Ugandan trio-Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Stephen Kissa started off changing hands leading the group, setting the pace.
Kissa played to the strategy similar to the Olympics which fell in the hands of Ethiopia's Selemon Barega.
In the front-pack, Ethiopia’s Olympic champion Selemon Barega kept closely in touch with the world champion Joshua Cheptegei and with four laps to go, the race was still wide open, with no leading pack.
In the homestretch, Joshua Cheptegei broke off in a fascinating 53.4 dash and posted 27:77:43 as Kenya’s Stanley Mburu and Jacob Kiplimo (27.27.93) ensued an all East African podium.
