Cheptegei won 10,000m gold at the 2019 World Athletics in Doha, Qatar and a repeat of the victory will cement his place as one of the greatest long-distance athletes of all time.
I feel I can defend my title – Cheptegei confident of gold medal
Uganda’s best bet for a medal at the World Athletics Championship, Joshua Cheptegei says he is confident of defending his 10,000m title.
The men’s world record holder in 5,000m and 10,000M will be on the track to defend his title today at 11:00pm alongside familiar compatriots Jacob Kiplimo and Stephen Kissa in Oregon, Eugene USA
. The deadly trio planned for 1-2-3 finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but the feat failed to materialize sacrificing pace-setter Kissa who dropped out of the race.
Speaking to World Athletics, Cheptegi says he is looking forward to defending his title.
“I just have one goal for this year and that’s to win a gold medal in Eugene,” Cheptegei said.
“After the Olympics, I took it a bit easier to recover and we started 2022 gradually. I am happy where I am at, at this point, and look forward to the Championships. I feel I can defend my title.”
The Hayward field has a special attachment to the star as he won his first international world junior championship in the same venue.
"I really have good memories of that,” Cheptegei said. “It was my first time in the USA, as well. It was the start of, so far, a successful career and therefore, Hayward Field and its fans always remain special to me.”
