Speaking during the event, NUP’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, said that every August 13th they look back on the sacrifices made in order to look forward with the unflinching belief in regime change.
As sure as day follows night, justice will be served - Joel Ssenyonyi
The leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) held prayers in commemoration of the violent incidents that occurred during Arua by-election in 2018 where Yasin Kawuma, the driver of party president Robert Kyagulanyi, was fatally shot.
“On this day, we gather to pray for the souls of the comrades who have left us and to remember their sacrifice. We especially remembered the brothers and sisters who have been murdered in cold blood over the past few years,” he said.
The event comprised families of fallen supporters as prayers were made for them along with assurances that justice will be served and their loved ones did not die in vain.
“We are super grateful to the leaders and comrades who have invested numerous weeks in planning for this event. May God grant that the sacrifices which so many people have made will never go to waste,” he noted.
The NUP party spokesperson and MP-Nakawa West Constituency, Joel Ssenyonyi, demanded a report on those supporters killed by security agencies over the last four years as well as those who are still in prison. This report would outline the course of justice, which they demand, he said.
“Today we marked the annual NUP Heroes Day, a day when we remember our fallen comrades. Many of these were killed by the regime in a manner so cruel, and justice still eludes their families. As sure as day follows night, a day of reckoning will come. We continue to demand for justice,” he said.

On this day, the presidential motorcade was exiting Arua Town on the south-western side toward St Peter and Paul Pokea Seminary where President Yoweri Museveni was to catch a helicopter ride back to Kampala.
It was the last day of campaigns for Arua Municipality parliamentary by-election to replace Ibrahim Abiriga, who was killed near home in Kawanda, Wakiso District.
President Museveni was canvassing for National Resistance Movement party’s flagbearer, Nusura Tiperu.
The president’s convoy then ran into a convoy of Kassiano Wadri’s supporters.
Suddenly, a stone was hurled at the vehicle behind the one transporting President Museveni, shattering its rear door windscreen.
In retribution, soldiers attached to the Special Forces Command, the president’s elite guard, descended on Arua town.
Within moments, Kyagulanyi’s driver Yasin Kawuma was shot dead in a Tundra vehicle parked in front of Pacific Hotel and half a dozen others were injured by a volley of bullets that filled the air.
