Air Force Commander Gen. Stephen Kigundu dies in bathroom

Brig. Gen. Stephen Kigundu, the deputy commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) Air Force unit is dead.

Defence Spokesman Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye announced his passing in a March 31 statement, saying he died in the bathroom at his official residence in Entebbe.

"It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces inform the public of the untimely demise of Brigadier General Stephen Kigundu, the Deputy Commander of UPDF Air Force which occurred in the evening of today 31 March 2024 at his official residence in Entebbe," said Brig. Kulayigye.

"Brigadier General Kigundu was well all day until the evening of today when he met his death in his bathroom. The UPDF fraternity and Uganda Peoples' Defence Air Force will miss Brigadier General Kigundu at this time when his services were most needed to continue strengthening our Air Force capabilities," he added.

"Our condolences go to the General's family, the UPDAP fraternity and the entire UPDF. May the soul of the fallen Brigadier General Steven rest in eternal peace."

Brig. Gen. Kigundu was among defence chiefs who graced the handover ceremony as Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba took over as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) from Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi who is now the junior trade minister.

Gen. Salim Saleh presided at the ceremony which was held at the 4th Division UPDF Headquarters in Gulu. During the event, Reserve Force Commander Lt Gen Otema Awany noted the importance of the 4th Division to the entire UPDF, as most senior UPDF officers have gained invaluable military experience through the Gulu-based Division.
