The inaugural race is scheduled for December 2024 and will feature various distances catering to both elite and recreational runners. Participants can choose from a full marathon (42.195 km), half marathon (21.097 km), 10 km, and a 5 km fun run. The starting and finishing point will be the Mandela National Stadium, welcoming local and international runners.

"The Kampala City Marathon is a ten-year project to brand Kampala City and Uganda as a preferred tourist destination," stated Minister Ogwang. "It's one of the strategies to generate revenue for the country."

Organizers envision the event attracting tens of thousands of visitors over the decade, offering them a glimpse into Ugandan hospitality, long-distance running tradition, and diverse natural beauty. The race weekend will be accompanied by cultural festivals, entertainment along the course, and even a Hall of Fame dedicated to the marathon's history.

Furthermore, the government plans to leverage the event to promote tourism by offering safari packages to various destinations after the race. This comprehensive approach aims to create a platform for Ugandan businesses to showcase their products and services to a global audience.

President Yoweri Museveni has pledged his full support for the initiative, with the government covering the organizational costs for the first four years. Following this period, the marathon is expected to become self-sustaining through private sector contributions and event proceeds.

Minister Ogwang called upon all Ugandans to participate in the marathon, "within your respective capacities," highlighting the government's commitment to promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. He emphasized the crucial role of the media and private sector in the success of the project.
