NUP president Bobi Wine has admitted making mistakes in the 2021 election that ultimately cost his party greatly.

The opposition leader says he regrets not being selective with the people he invited to the table and entrusted with key positions in the party.

He blames this mistake on a lack of experience and the limited time he had to prepare for the elections.

“I accept that responsibility because when we started the NUP, we had less than two months to the elections,” Bobi Wine said.

So we went with a big fishing net and scraped in everything. There was some tilapia that we bought in thinking it was tilapia, but realised afterwards that they were not.”

Bobi Wine was speaking last night on Busoga Radio about the state of the leading opposition party, which over the past few months has been on the brink of implosion following fundamental disagreements with key party leaders.

Bobi Wine noted that if he had been more careful, he would have avoided people like Twaha Kagabo and Jimmy Lwanga who along the way switched camps to join Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as well as others like Abed Bwanika, who recently took a public stance against the NUP leadership.

This has been a learning process. We got to learn that some people had been set up to infiltrate us by the dictator; some came to look for money and others for honour,” he said.

I have learnt not to trust anybody just because they are wearing a nice suit, or they have grey hair. As I moved along I learned that even the most convincing people can be bad elements.”

Going forward, Bobi Wine said he and the party leadership will be “keener on how we relate to people.”
