Uganda's most exciting spoken word poet is releasing his first EP, 'Endha'

If you ask any poetry or comedy fan in Kampala about which spoken word artist they hold in the highest regard, most likely that fan will mention the name Isabirye Godfrey Mitch Magada Jr.

The brilliant poet does what he does best

This tall and somewhat shy guy is a spoken word artist and Afro-music enthusiast whose boundary-pushing wordplay is usually the toast of every event at which he performs.

Although much beloved on the poetry circuit, Mitch remains self-effacing, to an extent, and still approaches his own growing celebrity with a careful detachment.

My style of poetry is majorly punchlines and classic word plays. My poetry is influenced by daily experiences because I make sure I can relate with the people so I try to see these experiences through their perspectives and creatively pen it down. So I am inspired by life,” Mitch says when describing his crowd-winning appeal.

Beyond being an everyman with more than everyday appeal, Mitch is a hard worker who is ready to burn the midnight oil into the fuel of his endless passion.

This passion is the reason why is he now releasing a spoken word Extended Play (EP), after years of grafting, in order to give his fans what they deserve: The very best.

The EP is called Endha and it has six pieces ranging from spoken word, to basic raps in English, Luganda and Lusoga. It was produced by three different producers that is Keith Mugenyi, Bonique Lamar and Joses Arins. It features five artists Andereya Baguma, Keith Mugenyi, Kenneth Mugabi, Bonique Lamar and Isabirye Mitch,” he says without a hint of arrogance.

Yet many would not be so modest if they had even a fraction of his achievements.

Poetry has paid some of my bills, gained social capital but the best achievement I have got is life,” he says.

And, wait: there’s more.

“The EP is dropping on 16th June however limited physical copies will be going for 20k and a small release event will happen at Ibamba Uganda Museum,” he reveals.

Like his quiet yet self-confident demeanor, Mitch’s material ranges from the intimate to the grandiose. His poetry is delivered with a casual air which often picks up by the punchline before it is punctuated by massive applause from his audience.

Everybody say yeah yeah! (In Mitch’s voice.)

“[The EP’s title] Endha is a Lusoga word meaning womb so practically this EP is like me being birthed to the creative mainstream scene. My poetry or spoken word journey goes back to 2018 but not until later 2019 that I became a bit deliberate as a spoken word artist,” he says.

His ability to weigh each of his words to ensure they all hit home is part of a predetermined path Mitch has willfully set himself upon.

I graduated in May from Makerere University with my Masters of Science in Environment and Natural Resources Management so I didn’t want to look unserious that’s why I am releasing the EP three weeks later,” he reveals.

Now, in order for you not to look “unserious”, lend this great poet’s EP your undivided attention.
