Victoria Cup is a chance to correct mistakes made in World Cup qualifiers – Coach Mudoola

Uganda Rugby 15s coach, Fred Mudoola, has noted that the national team is ready to give joy to fans in the 2022 Victoria Cup slated for this Saturday.

Uganda take on Zimbabwe at Legends Grounds, Naguru, off Lugogo bypass, July 30.

Previously held as a tri-nation tournament, the Victoria Cup returns after seven years following the recent decision by Kenya to pull out of the Elgon Cup citing financial challenges.

While addressing the press July 26, coach Mudoola, said the team picked good lessons in France. Uganda ended the fifth in the qualifiers registering wins against Senegal and Ivory Coast - both ranked above the Cranes.

This is a new slate which gives us a chance to correct many of the mistakes committed in France. The boys are eager to play before the home crowd and showcase the lessons picked during the Africa Cup”, he said.

“We ask the fans to come in big numbers to support our boys. They are in good shape and ready to put up a display that will make Uganda proud.”

Rugby 15s captain, Ivan Magomu, says the team is young and hungry for success after the experience in France,

“So many people doubted us but we did a great job in France, we're ready for Saturday", he said.

Uganda Rugby Union president, Godwin Kayangwe, said the clash is giving the fans an opportunity to enjoy rugby 15s.

Playing the Africa Cup in France and the cancellation of the Elgon Cup had almost ended the local fans’ chances of watching the 15s side out on the field. But thanks to the Victoria Cup we are going to give the fans something to cheer,” he said.
