Lady Rugby Cranes one win away from Africa Cup semis

Uganda beat Zambia 36-17 at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku to get their Rugby Africa World Cup qualifiers on the right foot.

The tournament is the first phase of the Women’s XVs Rugby World Cup for Africa. There is a total of four pools played in different countries co-currently with Uganda hosting Pool B that consists of Kenya and Zambia making the group.

Uganda now hopes to emerge as pool winners to qualify for another round of qualifiers in 2023.

Charlotte Mudoola was in perfect shape, scoring freely to give Uganda the much-needed advantage over the Zambians.

The Lady Cranes opened scoring with Angela Nanyonjo’s try. Mudoola added to Uganda’s lead with a conversion and penalty to stretch the lead to 12-0.

Mudoola stamped her authority once again with a conversion and try to give Uganda a 20-00 lead at half time.

In the second half, the Zambians pressed a comeback fight but Uganda’s margin seemed to a big difference to make up for.

Captain Peace Lekeru combined with Mudoola to press on with Uganda’s dominance in the game. The Zambians converted to bring the score to 23-05 but the comeback fight was futile as Mudoola could not be stopped combining perfectly with Lekeru to ensure Uganda won 36-17.

Speaking after the match, coach Leo Lubamabula expressed delight over the win but noted that the team must address the lineouts and work on getting the ball from the rucks faster ahead of the Kenya clash.

A victory against Kenya, a difficult opponent and region rival, will Uganda qualification to the next round of qualifiers placing Uganda in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup with a World Cup spot at stake.
