"We have so far registered four cases of theft of phones, one of stealing from a motor vehicle and one of indecent assault at Anglican Shrine. Meanwhile, at the Catholic shrine, we have registered 36 cases (35 thefts and one of issuing counterfeit currency)," a Police statement from Luke Owoyesigire, the Public Relations Officer for the Kampala Metropolitan Area reads in part.
Police register 36 cases of theft at Namugongo on Martyrs Day Celebration
Uganda Police has registered 36 cases of theft and 34 four arrests as the Martyrs' Day celebrations take place at both the Protestant and Catholic shrines at Namugongo.

The statement adds that 34 suspects have been arrested in relation to those thefts adding that they are now detained at Kira Division Police Station.
The annual event that attracts tens of thousands of people always attracts criminals that want to take advantage of the huge crowds of pilgrims to rob and pilage. The police is heavily deployed at the two shrines and all the activities in between to ensure security of human life and property.
The religious event attracts pilgrims from all over Uganda but also across the region, with some people walking from Rwanda, Tanzania, DRC, Kenya and other neighboring countries.
