She connived with other unknown people, who are still at large, to steal from Juliet Hatanga, a resident of Katumba Zone Kyanja in Kampala.

The prosecution, led by Patricia Cingtho originally asked court to sentence Nagaba to five years in jail.

They argued that such cases are an epidemic and that Nagaba should be made an example for others who contemplate the act.

However, Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza on Thursday December 22, reduced the sentence after Nagaba pleaded guilty to the offence contrary to the Penal Code sections 254(1) and 261.

"You are remorseful since you have pleaded guilty to the charge without wasting the court’s time. The prosecution had recommended a five-year jail term, however given your age, I have sentenced you to one year in prison," Muhumuza ruled.

She will reimburse the full amount when she gets out of prison.

"You are further ordered to pay compensation of Shs25m to the complainant upon completion of the sentence," he added.

According to court records, Hatanga carried out a search of Nagaba's room after she realised that her money was missing.

Following the search, $200 (about Shs700,000) was found along with clothes, bags, among other property.

It is also stated that Nagaba had sent some of the money to relatives, via mobile money, which they used to buy property in Mitooma District.
