The singer explains that when her and her crew were walking through the airport, the child looked at them and turned to her parents as she started crying. The concerned parents turned to her and asked her what was causing her distress, to which she responded by pointing at Rema and her entourage.

However, the parents responded to the child with comforting statements in which they called the singer and company, monkeys. Coupled with the mean looks from other Turks around the scene and derogatory gestures, the singer felt like she had stepped into the slavery era.

This happened while she was on her way to board her flight to England for a performance.

Turkey is one of the most advertised countries offering jobs for Ugandans who wish to work abroad. Including countries like Dubai, Qatar, Saudi Arabia among others. Over the past few years, many recruitment agencies and recruitment brokers have been established to help Ugandans get jobs in these Arab countries.

Notably, in 2012 Uganda entered an agreement with Turkey to boost trade between the two countries through the Turkish Trade Union (HAK-IS) and the National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU) of Uganda.

This agreement promised to improve the socio-economic lives of the citizens.

“We shall provide and exchange consultation services as well as training of experts of the two unions this new opportunity will create more employments for Ugandans in Turkey,” said Owere Usher Wilson NOTU chairman General.

However isolated the incident the singer has faced, coupled with unpleasant individual experiences of racial segregation in Turkey, it is curious just how far such public remarks go.
