Netball: Uganda finishes as Africa’s NUMBER ONE, beats South Africa 54 -48

Uganda senior netball team, the She Cranes are the number one team in Africa after defeating South Africa 54-48 in the 2022 Commonwealth Games play-off.

South Africa ranked number one in Africa and fifth in world rankings bowed to Uganda ranked 5th in Africa in the placement game in the Commonwealth Games.

At the group stage, Uganda defeated Trinidad & Tobago, Malawi and Northern Ireland. The She Cranes fell to world champions New Zealand and host nation England to finish third.

South Africa, also finished third to face-off Uganda in the placement match for the fifth position.

South Africa started the better out of the two sides taking an early 5 – 1 lead.

The match then went goal-for-goal with both sides converting from their centre pass. However, a contact call against Elmere van der Berg gave Uganda the lead, and then a flying interception from Nambirige resulted in Uganda scoring six goals in a row. At the first quarter break it was Uganda with the lead, with the score 15 – 13.

In the second quarter, Uganda maintained the drive scoring two goals to open the period. Jesca Achan interception made up for Cholhok’s rare miss as Uganda went to lead the quarter 30-21.

In the third quarter, South Africa staged a spirited fight back but the Cranes were more fluid and maintained a slim lead. South Africa managed to reduce the lead to just 4.

With all to play in the last quarter, Uganda capitalized on an offside call against the South Africa centre, Chawane, allowed Uganda to take a 6-goal lead with 7 minutes left on the clock and further frustrated the South Africans running down the clock.
