Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a number of sporting fixtures including the English Premier League were postponed in the United Kingdom in honour of the departed long-reigning monarch.
Kiplimo wins the Great North Run in Newcastle
World half marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo has lived to the billing in Newcastle, United Kingdom.
However, organisers of the Great North Run, a half marathon run decided to go ahead with the event, making a comeback following the Covid 19 hiatus. Following the confirmation of the half marathon, the organisers noted that the edition is dedicated to the departed Queen.
Bringing over 60,000 people together to pay tribute to the Queen over 21.5Km distance, Jacob Kiplimo continued with his excellent form from the World Athletics Championship, Eugene Oregon where he won bronze in 10,000m and double gold in the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham in over 5,000m and 10,000m distances.
Kiplimo posted 59:32 to win the half marathon in Newcastle. The victory makes him the first Ugandan ever to win the Great North Run. Running partner Joshua Cheptegei withdrew from the race citing injury.
Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega, Olympic champion came second posting 1:00:39 and compatriot Kenenisa Bekele came third with a time of 1:01:01.
In the women’s category, Kenya’s Hellen Obiri posted 1:07:05 to eclipse Ethiopia’s Peres Jepchirchir (1:07:07) and Almaz Ayana (1:07:10).
