Amou Haji, nicknamed the "dirtiest man in the world" for his refusal to take a shower for more than half a century, has died at the age of 94.

The Iranian passed away on Sunday Dejgah village, in the southern province of Fars.

Haji lived an isolated life and never started a family. According to a local official, for decades, he avoided bathing over fears of "getting sick".

However, a few months ago, residents in the village took him to a bathroom to shower for the first time. They said that his skin had not been touched with soap and water in decades.

In 2013, a short documentary titled "The Strange Life of Amou Haji" was made about his life, according to Iranian media.

It is believed that Haji adopted the lifestyle after suffering an emotional setback earlier in his youth.
