The party was officiated on Monday October 3, at their headquarters in Bugolobi following a delegate's conference that saw the party constitution adopt new amendments, the name NEED and Kabuleta as the party president.
Who wants money in their pocket? Kabuleta announces new political party
Joseph Kabuleta has announced that National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) is now a political party with pending approval from the Electoral Commission, but that the mission is the same, to empower Ugandans economically so that they can sustain themselves under the new party slogan, "Money in Your Pocket".
Speaking to journalists, Kabuleta said that party was first registered under the name People's United Movement (PUM) back in October 7, 2005 with leadership from former president Shadrack Ogemba.
Ogemba, and other founders reportedly approached him once they realised he shared their objectives and asked him to spearhead the party.
He was a member of PMU two years prior to the 2021 presidential elections in which he contested as an independent, for reasons he did not reveal, against 10 candidates.
Under the new party, Kabuleta maintains the vision that he has held under the NEED movement since he announced his run for presidency, saying Uganda is endowed with a variety of resources that can be exploited to improve the lives of the population. Something he said that the current government knows, but has denied Ugandans because economic empowerment would upset it's control over the population.
The party hails agriculture as one of the key avenues for economic empowerment as depicted by the symbol for NEED, a maize cob. Previously, the symbol was cattle for the PMU.
Ogemba, who has been elected Head of Party's Council of Elders, says that they consulted authorities on the matter and God in the move to make Kabuleta lead, and he has demonstrated his ability to drive the party objective.
