The bus, a Scania registration number UBD 269A belonging to Link Bus Services, caught fire, prompting the Police to respond. Luckily, according to the Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, no injuries or deaths were registered.
Link bus catches fire at city traffic lights
It is true what they say; when problems come, they come in battalions. Barely two weeks after a nasty Link bus accident that claimed 21 lives, the passenger transport company is in the news again after one of their coaches caught fire at traffic lights in Wakaliga, Lubaga, Kampala, last night at around 10 PM.
However, Owoyesigyire says that the bus didn’t have fire extinguishers on board.
“Our officers from the fire prevention and rescue services have noted that the bus had no fire extinguisher of its own. We advise all bus operators to have fire extinguishers in place in case of a fire emergency,” Owoyesigyire noted.
After the grisly Kabarole accident three weeks ago, government suspended the company's licence pending investigations into what could have caused the accident. The licence was reinstated one week into the suspension after it was discovered that the accident was caused by human error and not a machanical malfunction.
While lifting the suspension, the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, said that they had fully inspected the buses and found them fit to resume their operations.
The fact that the bus was found to have no fire fighting equipment has caused many to question the quality of inspection that was carried out by the ministry of works on the company vehicles.
