Uganda's Leonard Amanya, named among new Emmy's directors

Ugandan movie director and producer Leonard Amanya, has been appointed to represent Uganda at America's International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, commonly known as The Emmys.

Amanya, who works at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) overseeing film, video, and cinematography affairs is renowned for his award-winning film Crystal: Countless Misfortune.

He joins other Africans who have won membership to the Emmy’s Board including CEO of EbonyLife Media, Mo Abudu, Founder/CEO of Magic Carpet Labs, Ferdinand Adimefe (Nigeria); CEO of Vzhun Films, Emem Ema (Nigeria); and CEO of Gambit Films, Bradley Joshua (South Africa).

Commenting about his appointment, Amanya expressed delight and hope of learning from his fellow Academy members and industry leaders.

“I am thrilled to embark on this exciting journey as a new member of the Emmys. Joining such a prestigious platform dedicated to celebrating excellence in television programming is an honour in itself. I am eager to contribute my expertise and passion for the industry to the Academy's mission of recognising outstanding productions worldwide,” he said.

Together, we can continue to elevate and inspire the art of storytelling on a global scale," Amanya said.

Amanya also noted that his nomination will elevate the Ugandan media industry, showcase the country's talent and cultural wealth, as well as foster international partnerships and collaborations.

As a member of the Emmys, Amanya has been entrusted with several responsibilities, including active participation in Academy events, discussions, and initiatives aimed at contributing to the mission of recognising excellence in television programming worldwide.

Furthermore, he is tasked with advocating for the promotion and advancement of television content creators, professionals, and productions from his region, including Uganda, within the international television community.

Additionally, he must share insights, perspectives, and contributions from the Ugandan television industry to enrich the global dialogue on television excellence. Amanya's participation in the process of evaluating and honoring outstanding television productions is crucial; he will contribute to the selection of nominees and winners for the International Emmy Awards, ensuring fair and impartial recognition of excellence in television programming worldwide.

Created in 1969, The International Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences is a non-profit organization that brings together leading figures and professionals across all sectors of the television industry from over sixty countries worldwide. The Academy was established with the mission of celebrating excellence in television programming across the globe, and it achieves this through the annual International Emmy Awards.

Traditionally held in New York City, the USA, the International Emmy Awards recognizes outstanding achievements in global television in sixteen categories, with over a thousand international broadcasting, production and distribution executives gathered for the honors.
