In a statement made by GNL Zamba on his website, he says that the hip hop genre is a culture in a wider sense with four basic elements namely rapping/emceeing, b-boying/breakdancing, graffiti/street art and deejaying/turntablism.
According to him [Zamba], these elements have been recycled and developed to better ones like street fashion and street entrepreneurship.
“Ugandan hip-hop is a sub culture of the world wide hip-hop, that also celebrates all these elements but more dominantly the first rapping and emceeing. Over time, there have been warring factions of Ugandan rappers claiming the grandfather spot in the industry.” Zamba wrote.
Zamba says that the proprietor of Ugandan hip hop was the late Philly Bongole Lutaaya who first recorded a Luganda rap verse on an LP in the 80's. He was then followed by other artists like Yung Vibes, Bataka Squad, Sylvester and Abramz etc.
He adds that every rapper is uniquely endowed and that’s the reason he compiled a list of the best emcees Uganda has ever had since time.
