Rugby legend Alex Mubiru bows out

Kamotoka. Musava. The two commonest monikers by which Alex Mubiru is known in rugby circles.

On Tuesday, the accomplished servant of the sport announced it was time to draw the curtains on his rugby-playing days.

Alex Mubiru has been embroiled in rugby since way back in 2002 while at Kyambogo College. From there, he moved to the gargantuan Heathens, where he has swept and collected titles throughout his career.

Most recently, he guided the Heathens to a record 12th Uganda Cup crown. Mubiru won 8 Uganda Cup titles, 3 Elgon Cup titles, 6 National 7s titles, 12 Premiership titles, and 4 Makerere 10s Championships.

At a press conference held in his honor on Friday, 6th January 2023, at Kyadondo, Mubiru was covered in mixed emotions - sad to leave the game he’s loved and has loved him back, but happy to erase collision courses from his routine in training and match days.

“I have loved every bit of my rugby. I enjoyed it because I was doing it for the love of my club and my country,” said Alex Mubiru.

Mubiru featured in Ugandan colors representing the country on an international level.

He’s a member of the prestigious class of 2007 that swept Africa by storm to win the continental crown. However, Mubiru bowed out of the international game with 52 caps, remarkably scoring a try to commemorate his 50th cap (against Tunisia) in Kampala.

He also featured for the 7s team before he featured for the 15s team, making his 7s debut at the Dubai 7s games in 2004 under coach Herbert Wafula.

“18 years back, he was part of the 7s setup when he was still quick. Then, he got some weight and bid the 7s game farewell,” said 7s coach Tolbert Onyango.
