Much hyped as Golola’s parting fight, the bout was evenly braced as both fighters took the cautionary lane preserving energy for the latter stages. Golola boasts of a long list of victories over local rivals. Among his most famous wins includes against UPDF kickboxer Titus Tugume whom he knocked out with one punch in the opening minute of the fight.

Now, Fungu has joined the list that includes among others, Umar Semata and Abdul Kikenywa.

The evening started off with curtain-raising fights from the Uganda Boxing Champions League tournament were a number of local boxers braced off in the ring to build the momentum for the big occasion.

Fighting in an open space on a cold evening, in a packed venue, Golola and Fungu started by treading cautiously thus giving the supporters little to cheer about.

After overcoming the cautious lane, the two fighters in a change of strategy would unleash their offensive in the third round and both would touch the canvas much to the excitement of the crowd.

Golola also managed to land his opponent out the ring with a strong knee. Fungu bounced back in the closing rounds making several attempts to land heavy punches but the execution failed the intent.

However, it was a much better effort as Golola capitalised on his knee and jabs to get an edge over his former training partner.

The two fighters definitely were aware of each other’s points of strength and weakness.

The judges would award Golola victory by split decision.
