Liverpool vs Arsenal end in goalless draw in Carabao Cup
The first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final of Arsenal and Liverpool ended in a goalless draw even after Granit Xhaka’s first-half red card at Anfield.
Liverpool, without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane who are at the Africa Cup of Nations, lacked a good attacking squad despite Jurgen Klopp selecting his strongest available first team.
Arsenal were well worth a draw after a solid rearguard performance, and had the best chance of the game before Minamino’s poor miss as Saka forced a save from Alisson midway through the second half.
Liverpool started the semi-final in typical fashion, pinning the visitors back early on, but were unusually sloppy in possession. They struggled to create clear-cut openings, particularly after Xhaka’s expulsion, much to the frustration of Klopp and the home fans.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be encouraged by his side’s determination with a home advantage to look forward to as both sides aim to book their place in February’s final against Chelsea at Wembley.
