Ex-Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya named New York Red Bulls II interim head coach

Former Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya has been named the interim head coach of USL side New York Red Bulls II.

Sekagya takes the reins at the club following the sacking of head coach Garry Lewis who has been struggling to impress. The former national team skipper will be in charge till the end of the season.

Sekagya new appointment means the former defender has been elevated from assistant coach role, a position he has held at the club for eight seasons.

Also, Ugandan footballer Steven Sserwada features for the club.

Sekagya retired from active football in 2015 after registering over 2 decades of active football both at club level and for the Cranes. Sekagaya retired at New York Red Bulls after making 33 appearances.

He rose to prominence at Red Bull Salzburg where he won three Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup Championship in his six years in Austria.

Prior to the big name moves, Sekagya had generally been a journey with humble roots in the Uganda Premier League featuring for a host of clubs including Equator, KCC FC, State House FC before moving to Argentina where he featured for three clubs before switching to Europe.

At the national level, he was Cranes captain and was the one of the key figures of the golden generation that suffered multiple heartaches of near-misses in Afcon qualification campaigns.
