Yesterday, Among tasked Parliament’s Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline to look into allegations surrounding Kagabo’s efforts to return a Shs40 million ‘bribe’ to Parliament.
Speaker is persecuting Hon. Kagabo for exposing her Shs40 million bribe - Bobi
The president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi, familiarly known as Bobi Wine, has said by arresting their Member of Parliament of Bukoto South, Twaha Kagabo, the office of the Inspector General of Government (IGG) is being manipulated to protect the Speaker Anita Among from corruption charges.
Background
In June, the media reported that Kagabo and other legislators received a Shs40m ‘bribe’ in order to pass a supplementary budget.
Then, upon receiving said report, the National Unity Platform (NUP) declared this money as “immoral” and directed its members to return it.
On August 8, Kagabo, a NUP legislator, appeared at the Parliament with the Shs40m, in cash, to respond to the NUP directive.
Vindictive leadership
Kyagulanyi said under Among’s “vindictive leadership”, the parliamentary building has been turned into something approaching a house of ill repute.
“Anybody who stands in Speaker Anita Among’s way is summarily dealt with either by the parliamentary administration she heads or by other national institutions such as the police force,” he lamented.
Kyagulanyi claimed that when Hon. Francis Zaake faced her down, she got him impeached.
“Recently, parliamentary staff suspected of leaking details of the scam in which over Shs 2 billion was used to buy her a luxury vehicle were terminated from their jobs. She is now using the IGG to persecute Hon. Kagabo for publicly disclosing her personal involvement in the Shs 40 million bribe scheme. How much longer should the speaker continue getting away with this kind of impunity?” Kyagulanyi asked.
He said that the IGG must go over this issue with a proverbial fine-tooth comb, impartially and objectively.
“Any accusation of corruption levelled against the Speaker of Parliament must be acknowledged and thoroughly investigated instead of persecuting the complainants. Speaker Anita Among is not above the law,” he said.
Kyagulanyi is still in Kenya, officially observing the country’s elections.
