Police arrests 2 men over suspected murder of 75-year-old woman

The Police in Greater Masaka and Rakai districts have arrested two men for the alleged murder of a 75-year-old woman.

The woman in question, according to the Police, has been identified as Nakaweesi Maria, a resident of Nabugando village, Kitaasa parish, in Rakai district.

The Police have identified the two men as Kakooza Kerekensiyo and Suuna Silver.

It is alleged that the victim was assaulted on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, by Kakooza. The following day, the sandals of the second man, Suuna, were seen at her home.

Police said Nakaweesi, however, concealed what happened during the night. Her condition worsened, and she died at home as her son, Kimbugwe Yudah, was preparing to take her to the hospital on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

According to the 2022 Police Crime Report, the number of crimes committed in the country increased dramatically in 2022 when compared to the previous year.

The report indicated that the number of offences grew by more than 18% in one year compared to the previous one.

"A total of 231,653 cases were reported in 2022, up from 1960–81 in 2021. Thefts increased by 41% to 61508 from 43583 in 2021, while assaults increased by 9% from 29317 to 32041," the report revealed.

Early this month, police in Kiira Division embarked on an investigation following the untimely death of Godfrey Mbona, a 40-year-old man who served as Kira Division's treasurer.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, deputy spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at the Kira Division headquarters in Bulindo, Kira Division, Wakiso district.

According to earlier accounts, Mbona came to work in a regular state.

However, something unexpected happened during his lunch break, and when he returned, some of his coworkers observed that he had locked himself inside his office.

They glanced through the glass, concerned for his well-being, and were astounded to see him lying in the office lavatory.
