The Acholi resistance: Adventures of Alice Lakwena in the bush

It was just another evening in the life of the Babylonian ruler Nebuchadnezzar. Lost in the magnificence of his kingdom on top of a roof, he suddenly yelled “Look at Babylon! I built this great city. It is my palace. I built this great place by my power. I built this place to show how great I am!"

Within a second, God turned him into a wild animal, eating grass like an ox, his hair grew out and his nails became like claws.

In January 1985, a strange wind came over Alice Auma (Lakwena) made her numb and allegedly sent her into the bush not be seen or heard from for 40 days and 40 nights.

Unlike Nebuchadnezzar, who was punished for pride, at the time Lakwena disappeared Acholi was on fire from the fall of Former Uganda president Tito Okello.

Lakwena had always claimed to be connected to the spiritual realm which perhaps made her vulnerable to possession. While in the bush, she was free from the shackles of her role as Nebi, a village prophet, to explore her connection to the wild.

She started off by becoming acquainted with the foliage for food. Then begun the revolving door of spirits that possessed her mind.

According to her, the chief spirit that possessed her was an Italian man that had drowned in River Nile at the ripe age of 95. From the Italian, she adopted the name 'Lakwena' (messenger in Acholi language).

At one point, she was possessed by a North Korean native, a lady called Mariam and another called Medina.

When Nebuchadnezzar returned to his senses, he sung praises to God for giving him a second chance. His ego was effectively rehabilitated.

Upon her return on the scene in 1986, at the age of 27, Lakwena formed the Holy Spirit Movement and embarked on a journey to purify Acholi, Africa and the world with her own set of commandments.
