Watching people go about their lives and interact with each other, one would think that covid is winding down. Governments dropped the COVID-19 quarantine and distancing recommendations months ago, people have thrown off their masks and sanitizing is frowned upon now.

But scientists say that covid will linger far into the future. They reason that the virus has gotten better at getting around immunity from vaccination and natural immunity. Scientists worry that the virus will keep evolving, and some are even saying that covid-19 will likely be with us for the rest of our lives.

Experts say this virus will keep causing serious illness in some people because the virus “just has too many ways to work around our current strategies, and it’ll just keep finding people, finding them again, and self-perpetuating,” says Eric Topol, head of Scripps Research Translational Institute.

The other reason scientists believe covid-19 will continue causing serious problems is because people have relaxed when it comes to the precautions. To make sure you aren't one of those that will get seriously sick in future, here is a reminder of what to do:

  • Maintain a safe distance from others (at least 1 metre), even if they don’t appear to be sick.
  • Wear a mask in public, especially indoors or when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Choose open, well-ventilated spaces over closed ones. Open a window if indoors.
  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.

If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention. This protects you, and prevents the spread of viruses and other infections.
