In a letter dated July 9 addressed to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, party secretary general David Lewis states that the party has reached several milestones in the past four years and that they anticipate a high turn-up of guests for the anniversary commemoration.
“We have decided to hold an event to commemorate four years since the unveiling of our party on July 22, 2024. The event is organised under the theme: ‘Four years of NUP: The milestones reached, obstacles encountered, and a glance at the future,” part of the document reads.
Lewis noted that the party is flexible with adjusting the date for the event should the grounds not be available on the specified date, noting that they could postpone the event until the end of August, 2024.
Significance of Kololo Independence Grounds
The Kololo Independence Grounds has a profound history dating as early as the 19th century.
Kololo gets its name from the 19th century Acholi Chief Awich, from Northern Uganda.
He, along with Kabalega of Bunyoro, resisted British rule. Awich was arrested, brought to Kampala, and incarcerated on top of Kololo Hill.
The grounds have served as the main venue for national functions since independence.
“We accordingly request to hold this event at Kololo Independence Grounds, given its historical significance, as well as the anticipated number of people at the event. We have been advised that this ground falls under the supervision of your ministry,” Lewis stated.
The grounds were recently redeveloped with a 5,500 seater pavilion and a 20,000 square meter parade ground with pavers.
At least two national heroes, Ignatius Kangave Musaazi and President Kironde Lule, are buried at the grounds.
