Miss Uganda Hannah Karema came very close to clinching the Miss World Africa title at the grand finale held at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre.
Beating the odds
Against all odds, Karema made it to the top eight queens at the global pageant, leading the African continent along with Miss Botswana, Lesego Chombo.
She, however, failed to progress to the top four, losing the Miss World Africa crown to Ms Chombo.
Although she left Uganda for the competition last month feeling nervous, Mrs Kalema’s “Beauty with a Purpose” (BWAP) project presentation impressed the judges, thrusting her into the top 25 contestants, and ultimately to the top 8.
Karema's BWAP project
Her project, which she started after winning the Miss Uganda crown last year, involves supporting the girl child education in her home district.
The project also had several other activities such as distributing reusable sanitary pads, aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene in different parts of the country.
In her presentation, Karema praised her father, who raised her along with her eight siblings and gave them a proper education.
Coming from a family of many girls, she said, the community expected them to be married off at young ages.
