President Yoweri Museveni has cleared Ofwono Opondo to run for Member of Parliament as the representative for the elderly in Eastern Uganda.

Opondo, who is stepping down as Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, met the president last evening at State House Nakasero.

He also received backing from top National Resistance Movement leaders, among them Speaker Anitah Among, NRM Vice Chairman Al Hajji Moses Kigongo, and ex-Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda.

Last evening, at Nakasero I met Kaguta Museveni and he accepted my race for Older Persons Eastern Region 12th Parliament. I have also secured support from Hajji Moses Kigongo, Ruhakana Rugunda, Anitah Among, Oboth Oboth, Mukulaa and others, Opondo wrote on X.

Phiona Nyamutoro, the Minister of State for Minerals in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals Development, confirmed on Sunday, May 11, that she is running for Nebbi District Woman Member of Parliament (MP).

Earlier last month, Opondo told the Capital Gang radio show that he would leave his role as Government Spokesman to vie for the MP seat for the elderly in the next elections.

The seat is now held by Mafwabi Gidudu. Opondo said after 26 years as a government communicator, he wants to move into Parliament to push for change.

Ofwono Opondo joined the Uganda Media Centre on July 1, 2013. Before that, he worked as Director of Information and Public Relations at the NRM Secretariat from 2002, replacing Winnie Byanyima.

He also served as NRM Spokesperson from 2003 and played a key role in Museveni’s election task-forces between 2001 and 2016.
