Ofwono Opondo has confirmed that he will step down as the Government Spokesman to contest for the position of Member of Parliament (MP) for the elderly in the upcoming elections.
Opondo plans to challenge Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the current MP for the elderly representing the Eastern Region, and expressed confidence in his ability to unseat him, saying, “I have what it takes to knock him out.”
Speaking on The Capital Gang show today, Opondo explained that after serving as a government communicator for 26 years, he feels it is time to transition to the legislature to advocate for reforms.
He revealed that consultations with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his allies are ongoing to determine the direction of his campaign.
“I wrote to the President informing him of the conclusion of my tenure in three months,” Opondo said, confirming that he will officially resign by the end of this month in preparation for the 2026 elections.
Ofwono Opondo, a former journalist with New Vision, was appointed as the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre on July 1, 2013.
Before his appointment to the Uganda Media Centre, Ofwono Opondo served as the Director of Information and Public Relations at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat from 2002, succeeding Winnie Byanyima.
He also held the position of NRM Spokesperson from 2003 and was involved in President Yoweri Museveni's election task-forces from 2001 to 2016.
