The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) 2025 kicked off yesterday with an energised opening at the beautiful shores of Lake Victoria in Munyonyo, Uganda.
The Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon Tom Butime, welcomed over 3,000 delegates from more than 50 countries to the flagship event.
He called on all stakeholders to deepen partnerships and investments in Uganda’s tourism sector.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on May 21, Butime acknowledged the role of the East African Community ministers and international delegates in boosting regional integration and tourism growth.
Minister Butime noted government efforts in infrastructure development, expanded road networks, enhanced air connectivity, and digital access to key sites.
He stressed the need for strong, sustained support in destination marketing, investment promotion, and regional cooperation to realise Uganda’s vision of becoming a top global tourism destination.

Entertainment and culture at the heart of tourism
The vibrant press conference that followed was a celebration of Uganda’s rich cultural heritage and national pride.
Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, championed the spirit of togetherness embodied in Uganda Waragi, branded “Uganda’s Pride.”
Aly Alibhai, CEO of Talent Africa Group, underscored the vital role of entertainment in tourism growth, describing festivals like POATE as where “culture, creativity, and travel meet.”
This sentiment was echoed by the iconic girl group Blu 3, who promised a spectacular comeback performance at the POATE 2025 grand finale on May 24. The trio assured delegates and visitors that the performance would be “magic” and unforgettable.

Prime Minister Nabbanja urges sustainable transformation
In her official opening address, the Chief Guest and Prime Minister, Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja, emphasised tourism’s role in sustainable socio-economic transformation under the theme ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.’
She urged all participants to focus on inclusive growth, climate resilience, and embracing digital advancements.
Prime Minister Nabbanja praised regional initiatives like the East African Single Tourist Visa and the East African Tourism Marketing Strategy, which encourage cross-border collaboration and seamless travel.
Concluding her remarks, the Prime Minister invited international guests to explore Uganda’s natural wonders and cultural heritage, assuring them of a memorable experience.
She declared POATE 2025 officially open, calling on all stakeholders to harness the expo’s opportunities for lasting economic and social benefits.
