The Ugandan pastry chef has recently reached two unprecedented milestones, becoming the first East African ever nominated for the prestigious Pan-African Award in the chef category, and the first Ugandan chef to receive the coveted blue checkmark verification on TikTok.

These accolades mark a turning point for Ugandan representation in international gastronomy and digital influence.

Born in 2001, Walinda’s journey began in a kitchen filled with the aromatic spices and rich traditions of Ugandan home cooking. Under the guidance of his parents, Norah Namuddu and Francis Walinda, he developed a sophisticated palate and a deep understanding of how food serves as a communal bond.

This foundation, built alongside his sister, allowed him to master the art of blending bold African flavours with modern techniques. His early talent for pastries and desserts was evident to all who tasted his work, eventually leading him to pursue formal culinary training and a career that spans across the Middle East.

Currently based at the NUA Restaurant within the Almadina Heritage in Saudi Arabia, Walinda has distinguished himself by introducing a "fresh twist" to traditional bakery items. His signature creations—such as spiced banana bread, millet-infused croissants, and coconut-dusted puff pastries—seamlessly bridge the gap between his heritage and contemporary baking flair.

Despite his rise to international fame and his mastery of complex pastries, Walinda remains grounded in his roots. When asked about his personal preferences, he often cites "rice with any soup" as his favourite dish, noting that it remains the ultimate comfort food that "tastes like home."

Beyond his technical skill in the kitchen, Walinda has successfully harnessed the power of social media to showcase African excellence.

His recent verification on TikTok is a significant achievement, making him one of the few notable Ugandans—and the very first professional chef from the country—to be officially recognised by the platform with a blue checkmark.

This digital milestone, coupled with his historic Pan-African Award nomination, cements his status as a role model for aspiring young chefs across East Africa, proving that traditional flavours can command respect on the world’s most prestigious stages.
