According to Faridah Nampiima, the traffic police spokesperson, the driver is being held at Kyengera police station.

Nampiima says another bus driver of vehicle registration number UBF 006L who was also captured on camera driving while on phone is being held at Nateete police station as they process his case file.

The two isolated arrests have been spotlighted as members of the public become extra vigilant in the face of increasing road carnage with an average death toll from road crashes standing at 10 daily.

Earlier this week (Tuesday January 10), the Traffic Police Directorate started a campaign to sensitise taxi drivers and leaders on curbing road carnage.

The campaign which started in Kamengo is aimed at fighting road crashes, along Masaka-Mutukula, Ssembabule and Mbarara highways.

As a way of curbing reckless driving, Nampiima told journalists earlier this week the Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety would reinstate driver badges.

Following the crashes of buses on the road, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has taken a decision to reinstate the driver badges immediately,” Nampiima who was addressing the press on Monday January 9 during the weekly police security presser said.

She also directed all traffic officers to randomly check on driving licenses for three days effective today.

All motorcycle riders have in the meantime been given three days to renew, and carry copies of their driving licenses.
