In a statement issued on Tuesday, the country's standards body says the "fake eggs" are "actually sweets in packages that look like eggshells".

The body further says the "fake eggs hit Kampala market" article published in the state-owned newspaper - New Vision - contains "inaccuracies and misrepresentation of facts".

"We have not received complaints or come across cases of fake eggs on the market," part of the statement reads.

Earlier, reports had indicated that police authorities are hunting for four Chinese nationals suspected to be manufacturing "fake eggs".
