Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana taken to relatives’ homes – Lukwago
The development has been confirmed by Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, who is also their defense lawyer.
There was speculation about their whereabouts shortly after they were granted bail on Monday.
A group of lawyers went to Kigo prison last night only to be told that their clients had been delivered to their homes.
Lukwago has confirmed that Ssewanyana was taken to his relatives’ home in Masulita and Ssegirinya to Mengo.
He added that Ssewanyana, whose health was worsening while in detention, was taken to hospital for further medical treatment. However, the Lord Mayor has not given details about the health facility Ssewanyana was been taken to.
The duo was on Monday given a cash bail of sh20m after spending 524 days in jail, an equivalent of 17 months.
The two were remanded on charges of murder, terrorism, and attempted murder relating to a spate of machete murders that rocked the Greater Masaka region in 2021.
Prosecution alleged that both MPs planned the murders at Happy Boys, Kalenda, and Kayanja Estate House in Kampala.
The legislators are battling capital offences which attract a maximum sentence of death upon conviction. Both legislators have been in jail since September 2021. This means the MPs have been in jail for at least two and half years.
Opposition members have severally accused the Government of not creating an unfavourable environment for political participation. They say Government has which hunted them on several occasions.
