Rahma, currently aged 17 years said she wanted sponsorship for her academics and a green card in The States and the 40-year-old man had promised to sponsor all this, including promoting her talent.
The man, according to Rahma, was a friend of her mother and for a number of years had been sponsoring her music career but as time went on, he changed intentions and wanted to create an intimate relationship between them, which Rahma wasn’t into.
“At first he came with fair and fine intentions which changed later. From wanting to see me prosper and make it big in life, he also invested a lot of money in my career like buying me a car, backed with a lot of other tangible things. To travel to the US, I had to show proof that I was older and that’s how we changed age to act as if we are legally married. The introduction and everything that people saw in pictures was all an act because we wanted to get papers.”
Rahma adds that the man became so serious about the marriage and she had to quit everything because she is too young for a marriage.
This incident has raised public concern and the attention of the police, who have logged an investigation into it.
Luke Owoyesigire who is the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson confirmed to journalists about the investigations.
He adds that it is against the law for anyone in Uganda to marry a girl aged below 18 years and if it’s found out that the marriage happened, everyone that took part in the process will be prosecuted, especially Rahmas parents.
