Over 20 people feared dead following boat capsize in Kalangala
According to the Uganda Police, the boat was sailing from Lwanabatya and Ntuuwa Landing Sites, Kalangala District, heading to Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District.
Scores are feared dead, and Police confirmed that they have been able to retrieve only five bodies so far.
It is not yet clear the number of people that were on board; however, some eyewitnesses say the boat carried roughly 30 people.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigyire, confirmed the incident but said they are waiting for details from Kalangala.
"This happened this morning. A team has been sent to Kalangala to rescue the victims. More details will be shared in the course of the day," he said.
Police has confirmed that the number of people who were on board is 34.
It further clarified that the incident happened at 5am.
Of the 34 people on board, so far 20 people have been confirmed dead, and 9 rescued. The boat was carrying bags of charcoal, fresh foods, silver fish among others. The cause of accident is attributed to overloading and bad weather.
Rescue efforts are underway with teams from Police Marines, UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit and local community on the waters trying to locate the missing people. We appeal to members of the public who travel on waters to always wear life jackets and not to over load their vessels
