Mayiga writes to Kainerugaba over Eddie Mutwe as he appears in court

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), to hand over Eddie Mutwe, also known as Edward Ssebuufu, to the police as the appropriate law enforcement body.

In a post shared on X, the Katikkiro highlighted the illegality of kidnapping individuals, attacking journalists, and issuing threats, emphasising that such actions would not lead to positive outcomes.

Gen Kainerugaba recently revealed that he was holding Mutwe in his basement. Mutwe, a prominent bodyguard for Bobi Wine, the leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), went missing on April 27 after being abducted by armed men.

According to NUP, Mutwe was seized at Kiwango trading centre in Mukono municipality, following a meeting at Namweezi village.

In a social media post on Thursday, Gen Muhoozi confirmed the capture, stating, “I captured NUP’s military commander like a grasshopper. He is in my basement. Learning Runyankore. You [Bobi Wine] are next!”

Muhoozi further taunted, saying, “If they keep on provoking us, we shall discipline them even more,” adding that Mutwe was being trained in Runyankore.

Mutwe’s abduction has sparked outrage, with Bobi Wine demanding his immediate release. Gen Muhoozi’s remarks have drawn criticism, with many condemning the actions as unlawful and inhumane.

On May 2, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) called for Mutwe's swift release, with Deputy Spokesperson Richard Muyombya emphasising that such violations of human rights would not be tolerated. The FDC reiterated its commitment to justice, democracy, and human rights.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has intervened, with Chairperson Mariam Wangadya writing to Gen Muhoozi, demanding the release of Mutwe.

Recent reports indicate that Mutwe has been brought to Masaka High Court, reportedly limping and needing assistance to walk. He is expected to face charges, which have not yet been disclosed.
