After studying Business Information Technology at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Malaysia, DJ Karol, real name Carol Kisukye, landed a job in the marketing department of MTN Uganda.
Speaking to Crystal Newman in 2017, Karo said that after a year at MTN, she moved to Dash Events, an events company owned by Tendo Kagwa and Paul Kaheru.
Its offices were separated by a fence from Zone 7 Bar & Restaurant.
So, after work she would hang out at the bar sometimes and while conversing with deejays, including celebrated ones like Aludah, they noticed she had great taste in music and encouraged her to learn to deejay.
She was hesitant.
She finally accepted to learn and within a month and a half, she was "getting sessions" at Zone 7.
Karo, who is also a professional basketball player and coach, had been an avid music listener since she was young.
When she joined Twitter, she started sharing her favourite songs as playlist every Friday. Her followers liked the jams she listed and always looked forward to the lists.
At Dash Events she also lasted a year and left in 2012 to start a company called M-idea to offer digital marketing services to companies.
One of her first clients was Samsung. She convinced them to sponsor and an event called Samsung Twitter Party and this launched her professional deejaying career.
People who attended the party started offering gigs and she settled for corporate events.
Kinetic Management Group, which is owned by Cedric Babu Ndilima, her boyfriend, offered to manage her.
She said she would only accept two deejaying gigs a month since she was running a startup.
Born in Kampala, DJ Karo is a last born of four and the only girl.
She went to Aga Khan Primary School and Kabojja International School.
