2 killed after 3 trucks collide on Kampala–Gulu Highway
Two people died after three vehicles collided at Naluvule along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
Police said a Fuso truck rammed into a broken-down Mercedes Actros before a Sino truck overturned.
The victims were unidentified adult males, while two others were rushed for medical care.
Police moved the bodies for postmortem and launched investigations into the crash.
Two people have died and two others sustained injuries in a three-vehicle crash along the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Luweero District.
The crash happened at about 1:30am on Saturday at Naluvule and involved a white Fuso truck, a red Sino truck carrying sand and a red Mercedes Actros.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twineamazima said initial findings show that the Fuso truck, which was travelling from Kampala towards Luweero, collided with the Mercedes Actros that had broken down on the road.
Twineamazima said the Fuso truck climbed onto the stationary Mercedes and hit one of its passengers, killing him.
“The Fuso mounted the broken-down Mercedes Actros and fatally struck its passenger,” Twineamazima said.
He said the approaching Sino truck swerved to avoid a head-on collision after encountering the crash scene but overturned.
“Strong lights from the oncoming Sino truck contributed to the collision. To avoid a head-on collision, the Sino truck diverted off the road and overturned,” he said.
Police said passengers who were sitting on top of the sand being carried by the Sino truck died when the vehicle overturned.
Two unidentified adult males died at the scene, while two other passengers suffered injuries and were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.
Police moved the bodies to Luweero Main Hospital mortuary for postmortem and towed the Fuso truck to Luweero Police Station.
The Sino truck and Mercedes Actros remained at the scene as police waited for heavy towing equipment from Kampala.
Twineamazima said investigations were ongoing to establish the exact cause of the crash.
