First Lady Janet Museveni has described 2026 as the year God delivered her from the “jaws of death”, offering one of her strongest public reflections on the illness that kept her away from public engagements for months.

In a statement posted on X following the consecration of her daughter, Patience Rwabwogo, as bishop, Janet Museveni thanked God for sparing her life and allowing her to return to public life.

“2026 is forever marked as the year You delivered my life from the very jaws of death,” she said.

“When the enemy came in like a flood, You lifted up a standard against him (Isaiah 59:19). Thank You Lord for delivering my life from the snare of the enemy. Thank You for proving Yourself true and faithful to Your Word.”

The remarks add to Museveni’s recent comments about her health after a prolonged absence from public events earlier this year.

The First Lady delivered the prayer as the Museveni family celebrated the consecration of Rwabwogo to the office of bishop. The ceremony took place at Covenant Nations Church in Maya on August 23, 2026.

Museveni said her family had much to thank God for, including the long lives she and President Yoweri Museveni have enjoyed and the opportunity to see their children and grandchildren.

“As a family, we have much to thank You for. You have been very gracious and compassionate to us all,” she said.

“You have blessed Mzee and I with long lives and we have lived to see our children and grand-children. We have seen the peace and prosperity of Uganda, all these years.”

She also described Rwabwogo’s elevation as a reward for years of Christian ministry and service.

Janet Museveni said her daughter had followed Christianity closely since childhood and answered the call to ministry 20 years ago when, according to the family, “Your Presence came and settled over their home”.

She also prayed for Rwabwogo and her husband, Odrek, asking God to give them the strength to undertake their new responsibilities.

“Thank You for honouring them and choosing them to do this great work,” she prayed.

Janet Museveni said her daughter’s consecration also gave her and President Museveni comfort after years of service.

“This consecration is a great comfort and joy to us because it shows us that You have received our service and sacrifices and are pleased with us,” she said.

The First Lady has gradually returned to public engagements after her illness earlier this year. Her latest remarks give a clearer indication of how seriously she viewed the health episode, describing her recovery as deliverance from death.
