The term "deepfakes" is a combination of "deep learning" and "fake".
In 2023, Home Security Heroes researched the prevalence of deepfake pornographic content, and here’s what they discovered:
- It now takes less than 25 minutes and costs $0 to create a 60-second deepfake pornographic video of anyone using just one clear face image.
- 98% of the deepfake videos found online are explicitly pornographic.
- Across the top 10 dedicated deepfake pornography websites, the cumulative video views total 303,640,207. The monthly traffic generated across the leading ten dedicated deepfake pornography websites reached 34,836,914 this year.
- 99% of the individuals targeted in deepfake pornography are women.
- South Korean celebrities (53%) are the most commonly targeted group by deepfake pornography.
- 74% of deepfake pornography users don't feel guilty.
- Seven of the top 10 pornographic websites host deepfake content.

What deep fakes do is feed into people’s depravity by enabling them to fulfil hitherto impossible sexual fantasies. The sad thing is that no country has criminalised deepfake technology.
There are some key takeaways from these data:
- The large number of people using these platforms is fueling the growing demand for this content.
- The exploitation of deepfake technology to produce sexual and non-consensual content poses serious privacy and consent problems in the digital era.
- 99% of deepfake pornography using women as its main subjects emphasises the need of ethical issues in the creation and distribution of such content.
