The family members revealed this during the official send off of the late Engola which was held at Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds on Wednesday, May 10 2023.
Engola was gunned down a week ago (Tuesday, May 2 2023) at his home in Kyanja by his bodyguard as he prepared to go for Cabinet meeting.
Sabiiti was allegedly frustrated over poor and delayed pay by the Government, according to reports from residents who saw him fire shots in the air as he shouted his frustrations. This was after murdering Engola.
Residents said he later entered a nearby salon and took his own life.
There were demands of compensation from the deceased minister’s clan for the murder of their son. These demands were made by the Otikokin clan in Lango sub-region where Engola hails from.
Clan leaders said plans were underway to approach the clan to which army Private Wilson Sabiiti belonged in Tooro sub-region from whom they intend to ask for blood money.
This may now not happen given that Engola’s family has publicly forgiven the bodyguard for his actions.
The incident has raised alarm over the pay of security officers with some ministers calling on Government to improve the welfare of their bodyguards and also do consistent mental health checkups of not only their bodyguards, but also security personnel as a whole.
