The legislator was expected to be the main speaker at a rally in Kira Municipality which Ssemujju legislates for.

Wine together with other opposition lawmakers also had plans of planting a freedom tree at Ssemujju's home.

"Police and the military have surrounded his house and dispersed the people they found at his home. As we speak his house is still surrounded.

"Impunity at its peak. Fear at its height. Whatever they do, nothing can stop an idea whose time has come," the 36-year-old said on Twitter.

A police official told reporters outside Ssemujju's home that a letter seeking permission letter came on short notice.

He was advised to reschedule his rally since it was going to be held near the taxi park.
