Authorities in Kumi District say Sauce Peter Atwarun was competing to win UGX2,000 ($0.55) by gulping five-litre brew in five minutes.

The competition restricted the participants to only concentrated local brew known as 'Ajon'.

Atwarun drank his ajon in less than five minutes beating his other five competitors.

His life depended on alcohol and he barely ate, one of the organisers of the competition told local media.

Ajon is made from dry millet and it takes a week to mature for drinking. It's popular among Itesots.

Authorities have raised concern over the increasing cases of locals dying in drinking sprees.
