Museveni orders reactivation of local defence structures following ADF attacks
Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) has Wednesday, December 27 commenced an exercise to recruit Local Defence Personnel (LDPs) following attacks in the Rwenzori Sub-region by the Allied Democratic Forces terrorists.

"The UPDF, therefore hereby announces the mobilisation and recruitment of Local Defence Personnel (LDPs) in the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, Bunyangabo, Kyenjojo and Kasese," Gen. Kulayigye said in a statement issued on Tuesday, December 26.
The recruitment will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase running from December 27 to January 10, 2024. This will cover the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda and Bunyangabo, while phase two will cover the districts of Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa and Kasese.
According to the statement, "Phase 2 will begin immediately after Phase 1 and will be conducted as in Phase 1."
The mobilisation and recruitment will be conducted in 60 parishes as per the Quota system. Each parish will contribute 12 recruits, making a total of 720 personnel in phase one.
The criteria for recruitment will consider citizens of Uganda ready to volunteer service and they have to be physically and medically fit. They are also looking for adults aged 18-45 years with a minimum education of Primary Seven and have duly signed letters of recommendation from the LC1 Chairperson, Defence Secretary and DISO/GISO. Those to be recruited must be residents of the area with no criminal record.
The recruiting team will also ensure that candidates are disciplined and have no other employment/engagement. The mobilisation will be conducted by the Resident District Commissioner, Deputy Resident District Commissioners, UPDF, Uganda Police Force, Internal Security Organisation, LC1 Chairpersons and Secretaries for Defence.
