Speaking at a retirement ceremony held today at State House, Entebbe, for five retiring UPDF Generals, Museveni stated, "That retirement package is very good for you, do not gamble."
President Yoweri Museveni, also the Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), has urged retired Generals to make sound investments with their retirement packages, cautioning them against squandering their hard-earned funds.

The President reflected on his efforts to secure fair benefits for retiring soldiers, acknowledging the hardships they faced, including years of little to no pay.
"I struggled very hard to make sure that as you retire, you get a good package. That is why I kept the casualty unit in Mubende; I said I can’t allow a Ugandan who is injured and crippled in the army to go to the village when we are still getting these low salaries and be a pauper there," he said.
Museveni also emphasised the core principles that have shaped the UPDF, including patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and socio-economic transformation, which he described as essential for Uganda’s stability and growth. He stressed the importance of having an army that not only serves Uganda but also appreciates Africa’s broader context, rejecting any form of sectarianism.
Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth Oboth, praised Museveni for his leadership, which has helped the UPDF evolve into one of the most respected and professional armies globally. "The UPDF right now is one of the best, respected, organised, professional armies, not only in Africa, but in the world," he noted.
Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, drew inspiration from the Bible to remind the retiring Generals that retirement is a natural part of life, and he commended their service during challenging times. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by their families.
Maj. Gen. Silver Kayemba, speaking on behalf of the retired Generals, thanked President Museveni for his leadership and the global recognition it has brought to both Uganda and the UPDF. He also asked for the support of their families as they reintegrate into civilian life: "The nature of our work took us away from you, and you accepted. Now the same nature has brought us back to you. We kindly ask you to be accommodative as we adjust back into this life."
The Generals honoured at the event included Maj. Gen. Silver Kayemba, Brig. Gen. Christopher Kasaija, Brig. Gen. Charles Kisembo, Brig. Gen. Godard Busingye, and Brig. Gen. Fred Karara.
